A message from Pastor John……..A Devotion for Maundy Thursday 2020
Suggested Reading : John 13 : 1 – 14 : 31 Shorter Reading John 13 : 21 – 14 : 29
As I think about that first Maundy Thursday, the day when Jesus would burst the bubble of His disciples by telling them His time had come, not to be installed as the new, powerful King of Israel, but to be lifted up, to be killed, to be crucified on a cross, as not only their Savior, but the Savior of the World!
Try to imagine what it might have been like for Jesus’ disciples that day! A day that might have started out much like any other day, except possibly with a little more excitement, especially after the wonderful entry into Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday, and with the Passover celebration almost upon them. Those disciples surely had no idea what was in store for them, not only for later that evening when Jesus would be arrested and taken away, not only for the next day, when Jesus would be crucified, not only for the following Sunday, the First Easter, when Jesus would rise from the dead, but for the rest of their lives! Everything would change for those disciples!
Now, imagine if you will, what your life was like five or six weeks ago, the last week in February or the first week in March! Back in late February or early March, could any of us have imagined what life would be like today? Just as that first Maundy Thursday would be a time of upheaval and uncertainty for Jesus’ disciples, we find ourselves in a time of great upheaval and uncertainty. The disciples had no idea of how their world would change! There would be times of great joy and wonder as the Holy Spirit worked through them, but there would be times of great hardship and rejection as they carried the message of Salvation through Jesus Christ into the world. Just as they did not know what the future held for them, we do not know exactly what the future holds for us! One thing we do know, and that is that our world has changed! However, we do have something that has not changed! We have the promises of Jesus, that He will never leave us or abandon us, and that if we place our trust and hope in Him, one day we will be in Heaven with Him, and all those who have placed their trust in Him!
Prayer : O Holy Savior, The Light of the World, forgive me for the times when I allow fear and doubt to rule my life, when I fail to trust You and Your promises. May Your Holy Spirit be my guide, today and all my days, especially in those times when life is changing and when life is difficult. Help me to know that You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Remind me, O Saving Lord, that I am not alone. Remind me that You are still in control! Remind me that my future is securely held in Your strong hands. Guide me through this time of change with a faith that is firmly placed in You.
Thought for the Day : Even though we may not be able to share Holy Communion together this evening, the day will come when we will share Holy Communion together! I am looking forward in hope to that day! May the peace and joy of King Jesus fill your life!
