Momma Always Said… A Traditional Faith

Mark 7:1-9
Faith in Focus – week 2
________________ spirituality – don’t choose it because you are born into it
“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” Mark 7:6b-7 (quoting Isaiah 29:13)
Therefore love truth and peace. Zechariah 8:19b

Are we just culturally conditioned based on where we are born?

And if the pluralist, had grown up in medieval France or modern Somalia, he probably wouldn’t be a pluralist. So the geographical argument argument doesn’t carry much weight. Besides, I could make the claim that if you lived in Nazi Germany, the chances are you would have been part of the Hitler Youth. Or if you lived in Stalin’s Russia, you would have been a Communist. But does that mean Nazism or Communism is as good as a political system as democracy? No – just because there has been a diversity of political systems thorugh history doesn’t prevent us from concluding that one political system is superion to its rivals. Presumably, there are good reasons for preferring one political system over another. There are good reasons for rejecting a system like Nazism or Communism in favor of democracies. So why can’t it be the same with regard to religious beliefs? The point is: are there good reasons for believing one religious viewpoint over another? Paul Copan

Moving from a traditional to a biblical faith

1. Evaluate and question ________________________
Love God with all your mind (Mark 12:30)

“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9

2. _______________________ of what the Bible says
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

3. Be open to ____________________________
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19
