Waiting – week 3

Luke 1:5-25

It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him. Amos 5:19

But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. (v. 7)

But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. (v. 13)

Hope is about never ______________________

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23

There are some things only __________ can do.

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13

God’s response is always ____________ our hope

He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,  for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.  He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.  And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (v. 14-17)

Hope _________________________ with God

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” (v. 18)

“In an age of hope men looked up at the night sky and saw “the heavens." In an age of hopelessness they call it simply “space.” Peter Kreeft

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;  perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5

if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel…Colossians 1:23

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
